Final Canterbury quakes report likely before Christmas
The families of those killed in the CTV building collapse will be told first.
Release of the third and final report from the Canterbury earthquakes royal commission is expected before Christmas.
The government received the report today but is not divulging anything to the public.
The families of the 115 people who died in the CTV building collapse are likely to be told of the findings first before any public release.
The report inquires into the building failure caused by the quakes and was presented to Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae today.
Attorney-General Chris Finlayson says ministers will now consider the report before releasing it publicly.
He says volumes 5-7 of the report cover the collapse of the CTV building.
Mr Finlayson's spin doctor Ben Thomas told NBR ONLINE the report is "almost certainly" due out before Christmas, but the release date is at Mr Finlayson's discretion.
He says the release date is entirely in the hands of the minister, who has yet to read the report.
The report also deals with the roles and responsibilities in the building sector, including:
- The assessment of buildings after earthquakes.
- The training of civil engineers and the organisation and regulation of the engineering profession.
- The building consent process.
- Local government management of earthquake risk.
