The first state-private mixed tenure Housing NZ development in New Zealand is under way in Christchurch.
It was officially marked by Housing Minister Nick Smith attempting to drive a shovel into the sun-baked ground at 399 Manchester St in the central city.
Auckland building company Legacy is carrying out the development.
A Housing NZ spokesperson says the arrangement involves Legacy buying the site from Housing NZ and then building 26 units.
Housing NZ will then buy 11 of the units and the remaining 15 will be offered to private investors.
The venture is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014 and is intended to be the first of several around the country.
According to Dr Smith the $3.3 million project is part of a programme by housing NZ to build 700 new homes and repair 5000 by the end of 2015.
At the sod-turning he referred to getting away from ghetto-type developments.
