The Fonterra cooperative will open the world's largest milk powder drier at Edendale, near Invercargill, today.

The fourth drier on the site, it will make UHT and instant whole milkpowders, at a rate of up to 27 tonnes an hour, or around 120,000 tonnes annually.

The drier will boost the Edendale site's production capacity by 30 percent, and the milkpowder will mainly go to Middle East, Africa, South Africa, South America, Asia, Oceania and Mexico.

Some 500,000 cows on 1000 Southland farms provide the milk for the Edendale site, and the new drier will handle the milk of 150,000 cows.

The drier will be officially opened by Prime Minister John Key this afternoon.
