TIN 100's ten fastest growing companies by absolute revenue (click for larger image).

Computer services company Datacom is number two on the annual Technology Investment Network (TIN) 100 list of New Zealand’s largest high-tech exporters – and top in revenue growth, putting it number one on TIN’s “One’s to watch” list.

Datacom clocked $667 million revenue in its financial year to March 31 (up $55 million on the prior year), with fastest growth coming from its Australian operation.

The TIN 100, supported by government agencies NZ Trade & Enterprise and TechNZ, and private sector sponsors Ernst and Young and EverEdgeIP, was topped, once again, by Fisher & Paykel Appliances, with $1.2 billion revenue.

The report’s author, TIN MD Greg Shanahan, noted that New Zealand’s high-tech generated $4.9 billion in export receipts over the report’s survey year (to June 2010) versus $8 billion for dairy.

With the lingering effects of the global recession, and sharp currency shifts, it was a tough year for tech, but Mr Shanahan praised a “resilient” performance that saw total revenue and exports fall just 1% - versus a -9% decline for NZ’s top 10 merchandise export categories (which include dairy).

Including domestic revenue, the technology sector had $6.7 billion revenue, and employed around 24,000 people.
