In an already crowded field of 16 other wannabes, a former governor of Virginia, Jim Gilmore, is seeking the Republican nomination in next year’s presidential election.

He is the latest to file his candidacy with the US Federal Election Commission.

Mr Gilmore, 65, was Virginia’s governor from 1998-2002. He is a former army intelligence specialist, attorney, prosecutor and Virginia attorney general.

He has been chairman of the Republican National Committee and was briefly a candidate for president in the 2008 election.

Mr Gilmore hasn’t made any public statement about his candidacy but is planning a public launch of his campaign next week ahead of the first TV debate among the Republican candidates.

He told a local newspaper earlier this month, “I bring to the table experience that others don’t have.”

Debates on the Fox News channel will be restricted to the top 10 polling candidates but those on CNN will involve all of them.
