Four councillors elected to InternetNZ

PLUS: Non-profit back in surplus.

Fri, 28 Jul 2017

InternetNZ has released provisional election results for its council.

Four of the 12 spots were up for grabs for three-year terms.

They were taken by:

  • Sara Lee, marketing executive, digital learning advocate and InternetNZ Māori Engagement Committee (re-elected);
  • Dave Moskovitz, startup investor, recently involved in the multi-million Publons sale (re-elected);
  • Don Stokes, a pioneer involved in some of the first ISP services to set up in NZ and a founding InternetNZ councillor who returns to the fold with this election; and
  • Kate Pearce, a security consultant (newcomer).

Two incumbents have exited stage left: lawyer Rochelle Furneaux, who did not stand for re-election, and research consultant and ex Vodafone NZ policy lead Hayden Glass (a rare Auckland voice on the Wellington-heavy council), who failed in his re-election bid.

The other unsuccessful candidates were Global Mode co-founder (and receiver of one of NBR’s four votes) Matthew Jackson; Medical Drones Aotearoa cofounder and Institute of IT professionals board member Robyn Kamira; and GovHack organisor Kay Jones.

InternetNZ administers the .nz domain, advocates on issues like copyright, net neutrality and the digital divide, and allocates community and research grants.

The non-profit which makes most of its money from wholesaling .nz domain names has also released its 2017 accounts. Its total revenue in the year to March 31 was $10.22 million, slightly down from last year’s $10.56 million.

It recorded a surplus of $173,299, against last year’s deficit of $200,277.
