Express package company Freightways is launching a service catering specifically for customers buying and selling on Trade Me.

Freightways managing director Dean Bracewell said the service, called pass the parcel, was needed because of the high number of deliveries Trade Me generated and the requirements of its customer base. More than 250,000 items were bought and sold through Trade Me each week.

Courier companies historically focused primarily on business customers and it was not always easy for Trade Me customers to send items by courier, so many joined a queue at their local post shop, Mr Bracewell said.

With the new service, items could be picked up from many homes or workplaces and Trade Me customers could use Freightways' website to obtain a quote, pay, order packaging, book a pick-up and track and trace their item.
