A Havelock North family has rolled out a world-first product to turn sheep dags into produce.

Janet, Geoff and Ian Luke (sister, brother and father respectively) have developed a range of seed mats made from carded sheep dags. The mats are described as a “fail proof” way to grow a flourishing backyard lawn or vegetable garden.

Ms Luke launched the vegetable mats under the Woolgro brand name at the Rotorua Home and Leisure Show last week.

“We had lots of sheep farmers coming through and saying ‘why didn’t we think of that?’”

The sheep dags act as a natural fertiliser and the wool retains water, acts as a weed mat, and protects against cold soil, Ms Luke said.

“Sheep dags are an amazingly underutilized waste product and they’re perfect for the garden.”

The Woolgro range is made using an innovative vegetable seed injecting machine developed by Ian Luke, a technical engineer. Brother Geoff Luke is working on a similar roll-out lawn mat range.
