Todd Energy is expected to make an announcement next week after a giant gas flare in Taranaki fuelled speculation of a major discovery.

Residents near Todd's onshore Mangahewa-C wellsite, east of Waitara, have been angered by a flare they said was so loud they could not sleep and bright enough to read at night 700 metres away.

The Taranaki Daily News reported sources saying the discovery was so large that drillers had been forced to double the size of the flare pit at the site so they could adequately flow-test the well.

Todd Energy managing director Richard Tweedie said the flaring was normal procedure for testing a new well and getting it ready for production.

"Ultimately this well is great news for the oil and gas industry and both the local and national economy."

Todd communications manager Cressida Gates said the flaring was turned off at 7am yesterday.

Next week the well would be tied in to a pipeline so the gas could be exported to a production station.
