In a brief announcement today, Google said it had bought QuickOffice - a maker of software that lets you view, and edit, Microsoft Office files on an Apple iPhone or Google Android handset.
The move was widely seen as a strike at Microsoft, which has entered a multi-billion dollar alliance with Nokia to push handsets based on its Office-friendly Windows Phone software.
Google said it it plans to integrate QuickOffice's product into its existing Google Apps office software (which includes Gmail, plus equivalents to Microsoft Office programmes such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint).
Apps comes in a free version, and a $US50 per user per year corporate version, which adds more online storage, an uptime guarantee, admin options for multiple users and support for personalised web and email addresses.
There are multiple free options for viewing Microsoft Office files on an iPhone or Android handset. But most charge around $20+ to add editing ability.
