Deputy state services commissioner John Ombler has been named as the interim chief executive of the new Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority.
The government still hasn't managed to find someone to run the new earthquake recovery body.
Deputy State Services Commissioner John Ombler has been named as the interim chief executive of the new Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority.
Mr Ombler will be responsible for establishing the department’s organisational structure and recruiting some key staff.
In the meantime the State Services Commission has begun the process of appointing a permanent chief executive, which it hopes to complete within five weeks.
There had been speculation Customs boss and former military man Martyn Dunne would be appointed to the role but he will instead take up a new role as High Commissioner to Australia.
Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said CERA would have wide powers to relax, suspend or extend laws and regulations which would be used responsibly and for clearly defined purposes related to earthquake recovery.
He said many of powers in the proposed CERA legislation, which will be introduced to Parliament in the coming weeks, were based on those put in place when establishing the Queensland Reconstruction Authority following the state’s devastating floods in January.
