Businesses seeking to use the government’s new technology transfer vouchers have an initial list of six research institutions to choose from, Research, Science and Technology Minister Wayne Mapp announced today.

The four-year $20 million voucher scheme, announced in May, will allow businesses to access research services and expertise for a specific R&D project.

The scheme will be administered by the Foundation for Science, Technology and Research and run on the basis of a 50% subsidy for research from government.

The six research organisations who will lead the first phase of the voucher programme are the University of Auckland, Industrial Research, the University of Canterbury, AUT University, the University of Otago, and the Wellington Institute of Technology.

“More will be brought on board next year,” Dr Mapp said a release today.

Voucher values may range from a minimum of $100,000 to a maximum of $1 million, though it is expected that most vouchers issued will be in the $100,000 to $200,000 range.

Business will be required to match government funding for each voucher. For example, if a business applies for a voucher worth $100,000, then it will have to stump up with another $100,000 – making a total $200,000 available for purchase of R&D from one of the listed research organisations.

Businesses will be able to apply for a voucher from November 1.
