Green businessman and Wellington native James Shaw has been named as the Green Party candidate for Wellington Central in next year's general election.

Mr Shaw will contest the seat after Sue Kedgley announced she would not stand at the next election.

He attended Wellington High School and Victoria University before moving to London for 12 years.

In London he worked in leadership and personal development and sustainability and business practice. He was also a manager in the PriceWaterhouseCoopers chairman's office where he worked on sustainability.

He holds a MSc from the University of Bath School of Management.

Mr Shaw thanked Ms Kedgley for her service to the region.

"I am delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to stand for the Greens in my home town and contest the electorate where I grew up," he said.

"New Zealand is an OECD country with a low population, an abundance of renewable resources, and the ability to transform our economy faster than most. We can be a model for a sustainable, smart, and prosperous economy. We can do a lot better than merely catch up with Australia."
