Domestic guest nights fell 2.6 percent, accounting for two-thirds of the overall drop, while international guest nights were down 2 percent.
Although lower than January 2010, the latest guest night figures were still 2 percent higher than in January 2009, SNZ said.
Bay of Plenty and Otago had falls of 7.1 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively, due to fewer domestic guest nights.
Auckland was the only region to show an increase in January, with domestic guest nights up 10.9 percent and international guest nights up 3.9 percent. The 611,000 guest nights in Auckland for the month was a record.
Holiday park guest nights were down 4.6 percent from a year earlier, and motels fell 5.6 percent in January from a year earlier. Hotels were up 3.6 percent and backpackers were up 0.3 percent.
