In the mid-1960s Les Harvey raised enough money to save the Auckland suburb of Parnell from a drab concrete future.
Instead he bought many properties along the strip and restored them as the quaint wooden villas and shops that would become a signature of the now swanky upmarket shopping area.
His family still owns much of the suburb through City Construction, which is headed by Les’ son Kevin.
Les also accumulated a number of increasingly valuable properties around Auckland, which are held in trust for his three children.
Visitors can pay homage to the family patriarch, whose memory is preserved in a bronze statue outside Antoine's restaurant.
