The New Zealand Herald is a finalist for two Australia-based newspaper awards.

No other New Zealand newspaper made it through to the daily and weekend finals of the 2014 Newspaper of the Year Awards.

The NZ Herald is in the running in the Daily Newspaper of the Year and Weekend Newspaper of the Year categories for its weekday publication and the Weekend Herald respectively.

Newspaper Works chief executive Mark Hollands said judges remarked on the high quality of entries for the newspaper categories.

“We have some of the best newspapers in the world, and the challenge of trying to decide a set of finalists – never mind a winner – is a tough task.”

Judging criteria placed emphasis on quality of journalism, digital execution and the ability to record a growing audience.

There are 10 finalists in each of the categories the APN-owned NZ Herald is competing in, including The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

The Otago Daily Times, Rotorua Daily Post (which is owned by APN) and Fairfax's stuff.co.nz, are finalists in the regional and online categories.
