Highlights from Webb's $2million fine arts auction
This week Webb's auction of art works achieved over $2.1 million.
Webb’s auction of art works set record prices this week and achieved more than $2.1 million.
The sale set three new records with the highest prices ever achieved at auction for paintings by Liz Maw and Trevor Moffitt, and for a sculpture by modernist artist Russell Clark.
Liz Maw’s Aura sold for $56,300, double the expected price of $28,000
The highlights of the sale included $281,400 achieved for an early portrait by Charles Goldie entitled Memories which depicts Wiripine Ninia, a chieftainess of the Ngati Awa iwi. The sale price was substantially above the lower expected price of $200,000. The work belongs to Goldie’s sought-after pre 1920 period. It was during this time that Goldie was at the height of his technical ability.
Zoomorphic Lounge by Bill Hammond achieved $205,200. The work belongs to the Hammond’s critically acclaimed late 1990s period in which the artist painted with his now iconic palette of emerald green.
Landscape with a Road by Colin McCahon painted in 1965 which presenting a stark hillside and lonely road, sold for $117,250.
