A Hong Kong-style apartment tower destined for New Lynn, west Auckland, has received the go-ahead.
Auckland Council has granted resource consent for a 10-storey residential tower above the new Merchant Quarter building in New Lynn.
Construction is expected to begin this month.
The office of mayor Len Brown issued a media statement today claiming that “Aucklanders are embracing options being offered in quality, compact and affordable housing”.
Prices start at $250,000 for the 110 one- and two-bedrooms apartments on offer.
Mr Brown says more than half the apartments have already been sold off the plans.
Infratil is the council’s development partner in the Merchant Quarter development, while the apartment complex is being built by Tasman Cook.
It will be built above the council’s new five-level McCrae Way public carpark building in the new Merchant Quarter.
The carpark will continue to operate during construction.
Infratil development general manager Andrew Lamb expects the remaining carpark building’s retail spaces will be bought quickly as the apartment development proceeds.
The Merchant Quarter development is part of Auckland Council’s experiment in transforming parts of Auckland into a high-density, high-rise city as outlined in the Auckland Plan.
One of the proponents of the high density plans, deputy mayor Penny Hulse, describes New Lynn as “Auckland’s poster child for brownfields development”.
