In a day when news is micro-managed, spin doctors overwhelm journalists, CEOs are schooled-up and questions are asked for in advance, it’s not surprising that media are daily bombarded with statements and press releases.
But Private Bin thinks sending out an eight-paragraph statement to about 500 recipients (at a conservative estimate) might be considered overkill.
After all, Minister for the Environment Nick Smith was only “commending” a forest proposal.
In an apparent “perfect illustration” of the benefits of the government’s Emissions Trading Scheme, Puketapu 3A Incorporation has teamed up with state-owned Mighty River Power on a 2400ha forest proposal.
Mr Smith and his press secretary obviously thought it important to tell the world that the proposed Taupo forest will reduce carbon emissions and nitrate run off – thanks to the ETS.
“The parties involved in this afforestation project have made it plain it would not be occurring if the government had not settled the ETS last year. This complex scheme encourages those that burn fossil fuels to contribute to forest planting.”
In the benefit of the doubt, the email to every news desk in the country might have been a mistake.
Let’s hope nobody accidentally printed the email – how many pieces of paper does a tree create?
