The construction sector is improving with more projects announced at the high end of the market than at the same time last year.
According to the latest report from construction researchers Pacifecon there were 30 major construction projects worth more than $5 million announced in March, up from 25 in March 2009.
A new prison in South Auckland, which could be a public-private-partnership, at Wiri is one of the projects just announced which would be about $400 million.
Other projects include a $100 million student accommodation village at central Christchurch for international students of Lincoln University, University of Canterbury and Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.
Ryman Healthcare’s $90 million new retirement village at Mairehau in Christchurch is also included here. It will be on an 11ha site and cater for 450 residents, with 150 staff.
Tenders announced in March include NZ Transport Agency’s $455 million Eastern Link at Tauranga, a $150 million new clinical services building at Middlemore Hospital in Otahuhu, Auckland and a $100 million wood processing plant for Hikurangi Forest Farms.
The University of Otago is at the tendering stage for a $50 million new building, while Dunedin City Council is tendering a $64.5 million wastewater treatment plant.
The $25 million upgrade of Auckland’s ASB Tennis Centre is under construction and works have begun at the $31.8 million new Viaduct Events Centre at Wynyard Quarter on Auckland’s waterfront.
Ryman Healthcare started building its new $40 million Gisborne retirement village last months, and Progressive Enterprises started a Countdown supermarkt at Hornby that will be more than $10 million.
