IT, finance, government most likely to hire
Increased hiring intentions within government reflect preparation ahead of the 2014 general election.
Bosses in the IT industry and government are the most keen to hire new staff in the next three months.
Findings in the latest employment trends report by recruitment company Hudson reveal just minimal headcount growth is anticipated by employers generally this quarter.
More than half intend to keep their headcount steady between July and September, while intentions to increase it inched up 2.1% to 30.5%.
The strongest intentions to hire come from employers within the information technology industry, where 51.4% intend to hire more staff between July and September, followed by the government, financial services and insurance at 32% each.
Hudson New Zealand general manager Roman Rogers says investment in technology and the focus on efficiency gains is driving business’ demand for senior IT people, business intelligence, in-house IT support and customer engagement roles.
“And increased hiring intentions within government largely reflect preparation ahead of the 2014 general election," Mr Rogers says.
Hudson surveys 1056 New Zealand employers about their hiring intentions for the quarterly Hudson Report: Employment Trends.
“Intentions to hold headcount at existing levels represents a continued focus by employers on building capability and driving productivity within their teams,” Mr Rogers says.
While employment growth remains gradual, he sees more focus by organisations on talent management and retaining top performers.
Among small businesses, hiring intentions are up 17% as cheaper commodity prices fuelled by the high exchange rate are helping to lower private debt levels and drive consumer confidence.
Hiring intentions in the South Island remain high at 40.3% and rebuild-related spending is set to be a strong economic driver in the region for many years.
