Jetstar has teamed up with airline giant American Airlines to codeshare on its domestic NZ flights.

American Airlines, the world’s second largest airline by passenger miles and revenue, already has a codeshare arrangement with Jetstar’s parent airline Qantas on daily flights between Auckland and Los Angeles.

The new codeshare, subject to regulatory approval, will see those inbound Qantas flights now connect up with Jetstar’s low fare flights across the country.

Jetstar Group chief executive Bruce Buchanan said the arrangement offered American Airlines’ passengers better access to cheaper domestic fares to get around New Zealand – which could now be booked and ticketed under one booking.

It would also help boost tourism from the US – New Zealand’s third largest tourist market worth more than $530 million annually, he said.

American Airlines would now market Jetstar flights and New Zealand to its US frequent flyer network of 50 million customers – helping bring in more visitors and increase tourism,” said Mr Buchanan.

“It’s a great way to push out all the things we’re doing in there New Zealand marketplace and that will help bring more tourists to this part of the world.”

The codeshare is Jetstar’s third codeshare for New Zealand domestic services, alongside Qantas and Japan Airlines and Mr Buchanan estimated 20% of Jetstar’s domestic passengers were sold through its these airline partnerships.
