Jetstar is offering the first Dreamliner flights across the Tasman for a limited time early next year.
The budget airline has announced the flights between Auckland to Melbourne are open for booking from today for travel from February 26 to March 28, 2014.
The one-way fares start at $149 from and are available only until December 20 and do not include baggage costs.
The Dreamliner will replace the Airbus A320 on the Auckland-Melbourne route on three days of the week, adding additional capacity of more than 3700 seats.
Jetstar’s 787s carry 335 customers and feature a 21-passenger business class cabin with 314 in economy and inflight entertainment in every seat.
While full business class service will not be offered on the transtasman schedule, the business cabin will be available to purchase as an extra leg room seat.
Jetstar took delivery of its first Boeing 787 in September this year and is receiving its second in December and third in early January 2014.
The airline intends to have an all-787 long-haul fleet by 2015, when they will replace Airbus A330 services.
The Auckland-Singapore route will eventually be served by the Dreamliner, which offers larger windows, technology to minimise turbulence, and improved cabin pressure and humidity to reduce jet lag.
Grant Kerr, Jetstar head of New Zealand says the limited deployment on a short-haul route will give Kiwis the chance to experience the Dreamliner for themselves.
“While many New Zealanders may not be planning a long haul trip, this a great opportunity to try out the aircraft that everyone’s talking about, on a Tasman flight,” he says.
