New Zealand jeweller Michael Hill is set to launch an international competition to find the "world's best couple" and is offering the successful couple a 22-carat princess-cut diamond ring.

The retailer will kick off the Search for the World's Best Couple contest in New York's Rockefeller Centre later this month, The Jeweller magazine reported online.

An American reality TV performer Kim Kardashian -- who is featuring with her sister Kourtney, in a new show set in New York -- will model the ring at its launch.

After that, chief executive Michael Hill will tour nine cities to show off the diamond ring.

Couples who enter the contest will have to compete in a series of online challenges, and a panel of judges will choose a winner from six short-listed couples.

The winning pair will be flown to Chicago to be presented with the diamond, which Mr Hill said was one of the highest grades of the gem he had ever seen. The 22-carat ring is surrounded by 0.60 carats of accent diamonds set in platinum.

"The cut, clarity, colour and carat of this diamond is absolutely brilliant," Mr Hill said in a statement.

The contest is open to couples in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada, as long as they are dating, engaged or already married.
