Job ads rose throughout 2011 providing a positive employment outlook for 2012, according to the latest Seek survey.
Job ads have risen over the past year with over 250,000 jobs advertised on Seek.co.nz since November 2010.
Over the past 12 months job ads rose 10%, with 25,000 more jobs advertised than in the previous year according to data released by Seek.
Narrowed down to the month, August proved to be the best time for Kiwi workers to secure new jobs, with December 2010 predictably the month with the lowest number of job listings as businesses wound down for the holiday season.
Regionally, Canterbury had the strongest new job growth at 49%, an increase of almost 900 roles over the past year. Wellington came second with a 12% increase, slightly above the national average and with almost 400 additional roles.
Auckland took third place out of the three regions surveyed, experiencing a slight growth of 2% but remaining the national hot spot for most job opportunities in the country, with a total of 138,000 roles advertised over the past 12 months.
Janet Faulding, general manager of SEEK New Zealand, says 2011 trends are positive overall and puts regional variation down to unique local conditions.
“In Christchurch the new job growth is attributed to roles necessary to support the recovery and rebuilding effort, whereas Auckland we are seeing a slow and steady continuation of business recovery post recession.”
In terms of job classifications, the top three areas in growth by the number of job opportunities were ‘accounting’ which grew by 430 job ads, ‘information and communication technology’ increasing by almost 400 and ‘trades and services’ growing by 250 job ads.
