A Kiwi, who left the country more than 35 years ago to pursue his international career, has been named a finalist for the 2010 Hays Chartered Accountant of the Year award.
International company director, Neville Bain, is one of six finalists for the annual New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants award.
Mr Bain, who chairs the Institute of Directors in London, which has almost 50,000 members, left New Zealand in 1975.
He spent most of his career at Cadbury Schweppes where he was promoted throughout the company to become the groups’ finance director in 1990. He was also group chief executive of Coats Viyella for six years, a global clothing and fashion company and chairman of business travel firm Hogg Robinson.
Mr Bain said his education in accounting in New Zealand laid an important foundation for his highflying career.
“For 25 years this training has given me a great foundation not only for financial management but also in general management in different countries of the world. Training as an accountant is an excellent prerequisite for general management.”
He is currently a director of several companies, including chair of Trustees HRG pension fund and director of international biotech pharmaceutical company Biocon.
He comes back to New Zealand every two years and has given lectures as an alumni of the University of Otago. This year he will talk to the senior students at his old school, King’s High School in Dunedin.
The Hays Chartered Accountant of the Year award recognises New Zealand’s top chartered accountant who has most effectively demonstrated leadership and contributed to the success of their employer, clients or the accounting profession.
The award winners will be announced at the 2010 Leadership Awards gala dinner in Auckland on 30 November.
