New Zealander Shayne Elliott has been appointed chief executive of trans-Tasman banking group ANZ, succeeding Mike Smith who steps down at the end of December.
Mr Elliott is currently the group’s chief financial officer. He takes over as CEO on January 1 and will also join the board.
ANZ chairman David Gonski described Mr Elliott as an outstanding candidate.
“Today’s announcement is a result of a detailed review of external and internal candidates. Shayne’s international banking and financial experience, together with his background in Australia and New Zealand makes him the right person to lead ANZ in a challenging global environment,” Mr Gonski said.
Mr Elliott, 51, said he was honoured to have the opportunity to lead ANZ.
“ANZ is a bank that plays an important role supporting our customers and communities in 34 countries. Our people are guided by a clear strategy and a strong set of values. I look forward to working with Mike during the transition period and to building on the foundation he has established.”
Mr Elliott will be paid a target remuneration of $A6.3 million, comprising fixed pay of $A2.1m, target short term incentive of $A2.1m and long-term incentive target of $A2.1m.
An Auckland University graduate with a degree in commerce, management studies and finance, Mr Elliott spent 20 years with Citigroup before joining investment bank EFG Hermes, where he spent three years in Egypt as chief operating officer.
He is married with one daughter and lives in Melbourne.
