Labour MP Nanaia Mahuta has confirmed she will move off her party's front bench.
She told the Waikato Times the decision was for the benefit of her 14-month-old son, Waiwaia.
"It is really important to me to give him stability and I am absolutely about putting family first and then focusing on my electorate," she said.
The move would mean less travel.
Labour leader Phil Goff is shortly to announce a reshuffle.
"I spoke to Phil at our caucus meeting and told him I needed to concentrate on the family and my electorate right now and then see what happens after the election," the Hauraki-Waikato MP said.
