Labour chief press secretary Kris Faafoi has confirmed he will tilt at selection for the Mana seat north of Wellington to stand in the upcoming by-election.
Mr Faafoi told NZPA he would immediately quit his role if selected -- nominations close on September 9 with selection on the 18th.
When the by-election is held will depend on when incumbent MP Winnie Laban leaves. She has accepted a job at Victoria University.
Mr Faafoi said if selected he would continue in Ms Laban's footsteps.
"I personally want to continue the kind of politics that Winnie has used over the last 10 years, she's been a really community spirited person in there and I am excited about getting into that kind of politics as opposed to the parliamentary side of politics which I know well."
He wanted to make a constructive difference in areas like employment, education and transport.
Both his parents are Tokelauen parents and Porirua is the largest population centre for the group outside of their islands.
Originally from Christchurch, Mr Faafoi said he frequently visited Porirua while growing up.
"I know the place like the back of my hand."
