Support has eased for the National-led government in the latest public opinion poll, though it is still a clear leader in the political stakes.
The New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll shows support for the government parties has weakened to 55.5% (down 2pts), comprising National 50.5% (down 2), Maori 3% (down 0.5), Act 1% (unchanged) and United Future 1% (up 0.5).
Support for opposition parties has risen to 44.5% (up 2pts); Labour Party 33% (up 3), Greens 9.5% (unchanged), New Zealand First 1.5% (down 1), others 0.5% (up 0.5) and the Progressive Party 0% (down 0.5).
The Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating is down slightly – 1pt to 136.5 with 60.5% (down 3pts) of New Zealanders saying New Zealand is “heading in the right direction” compared with 24% (down 2) that say New Zealand is “heading in the wrong direction.”
Pollster Gary Morgan says this result shows a slight reversal of the post-Budget bounce for the National-led government.
“The fall in support for National mirrors a slight fall in the Government Confidence Rating (136.5, down 1pt) and also a fall in June’s ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence measure (122.0, down 4pts), driven lower by decreasing confidence about the year ahead.
“Clearly, despite New Zealand emerging from a deep recession only months ago, many New Zealanders are still worried about economic uncertainty — only 44% of New Zealanders expect ‘good times’ financially in New Zealand as a whole over the next 12 months.
“Prime Minister Key will be looking to improve Consumer Confidence over the year ahead as he seeks re-election in just over a year’s time.”
