A Qantas plane has touched down safely after the latest in a string of recent mid-air incidents for the airline.

The plane, which had 199 people on board, turned around only one hour into its flight and has now arrived safely at Sydney Airport.

The airline will now carry out an inspection to work out what caused the problem.

Earlier this month a Qantas Airbus A380's engine exploded over Indonesia.

A day later a Qantas Boeing 747 had to turn back to Singapore after a contained engine failure.

And on Friday a Qantas 767 turned back to Perth after vibrations were detected in one of its engines.

A Qantas plane en route to Argentina has been forced to dump fuel and return to Sydney following an as yet unidentified problem with the aircraft.

QF17, en route to Argentina with 119 passengers, turned around about one hour into its flight, Qantas said in a statement to media.

The aircraft took off from Sydney at 11.11am  local time (1.11pm NZ time) Qantas has yet to say when the plane is due to land.
