Spark’s [NZX:SPK] video streaming service Lightbox has added 65 local and international short films to its platform after becoming a principal sponsor of the Show Me Short Film Festival.
It has also struck a deal with NHNZ (formerly Natural History New Zealand) to broadcast a large collection of locally produced documentaries, including the acclaimed and locally produced ZooMoo, an animated animal TV show for children.
Lightbox chief executive Kym Niblock says the partnerships are “big news” for the service and its drive to provide local content alongside its international TV shows.
Each year Show Me Shorts curates a festival of the 40 best films, which are played in cinemas throughout New Zealand. Lightbox has access to a curated selection of highlights from the catalogue and the films will be released in batches on the online television service.
NHNZ produces more than 60 hours of television every year seen in more than 180 countries around the world.
In its annual report, Spark said Lightbox had exceeded its goal of 70,000 subscribers. This includes existing Spark customers offered Lightbox for free but Spark won’t say what actual subscriber numbers are, saying none of its competitors have revealed numbers, so it won’t either.
