Government ministers and mayors met last night and agreed to work together on infrastructure investment and planning, Infrastructure Minister Bill English said today.

They agreed to develop an integrated planning framework, remove unnecessary regulatory barriers, cooperate around asset management and make sure local government had the tools to manage infrastructure, he said.

Central and local government must work together for smarter infrastructure decisions and investment, Mr English said.

"At a time when our finances are constrained it is vital we get the most out of this investment -- that means projects must be properly selected and must provide a justifiable return on taxpayers' funds."

The mayors of Wellington, Hastings, New Plymouth, South Wairarapa and Ashburton and the chair of the Northland Regional Council attended the meeting last night.
