Kiwi production Boy and a string of Hollywood blockbusters boosted the New Zealand box office to more than $167 million in 2010.
The huge popularity of low budget local production Boy and a string of blockbusters, many in 3D, boosted the New Zealand box office to more than $167 million in 2010.
That’s 6.1% ahead of last year’s $157.4 million, based on figures for 51 weeks (to December 19).
The special effects blockbuster Avatar set a hot pace at the box office after its December 2009 release, grossing a record total of $17.2 million. During 2010, it was the top-grossing film for seven weeks.
Boy outpaced the rest of the Hollywood crowd-pleasers, bringing in $9.2 million. That was well ahead of the next most popular films, Inception, which garnered both critical and mass audience approval, and the first of the two Twilight youth-oriented vampire films.
The latest in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, is close behind and likely to overtake both once its cinema season concludes next year.
The second of the Twilight films, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was placed fifth behind Toy Story 3, which was a critical and box office hit.
