Members of Parliament were the first to see the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s new production of Swan Lake at a sneak preview in the Legislative Council Chamber at Parliament House.
The event marked the official recognition of the ballet’s 60th anniversary with praise by Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson.
Later this month the company will open the ballet ahead of a national tour of eight cities.
Russell Kerr's classic production of Swan Lake is the major work for the company’s 2013 season.
Considered the greatest of all classical ballets, it is a perfect synthesis of music and dance.
With Tchaikovsky's sweeping score – lush, romantic, instantly recognisable – and Kristian Fredrikson's opulent designs, Swan Lake transports the audience from ballroom to lakeside in this great romantic tragedy.
Injury has forced international guest artist and principal artist with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Carla Korbes, to withdrawn from her scheduled performances as Odette / Odile.
Replacing her will be Gillian Murphy, principal artist with American Ballet Theatre and principal guest artist of the RNZB.
International guest artist Karel Cruz, also a principal artist with Pacific Northwest Ballet, will dance the role of Prince Siegfried opposite Murphy's Odette/Odile.
Australian Amber Scott and New Zealander Ty King-Wall, principal artists of the Australian Ballet, will also perform the leading roles, alternating with casts from within the RNZB.
