The tourism industry yesterday made moves to reassure Rugby World Cup fans the country could accommodate them.
Many hotel rooms are being held in a central accommodation bank and will not be released until later this year.
As Rugby New Zealand announced details of the ticket sale structure yesterday, the Tourism Industry Association (TIA), New Zealand Hotel Council (NZHC) and Inbound Tour Operators Council (ITOC) made a joint statement.
The Hotel Council's independent chairwoman Jennie Langley said more options would be available in September or October.
“Rooms in many hotels are still being held in the RWC official accommodation bank, to ensure that all players, officials and guests travelling with the tournament’s official travel agencies have rooms.
"But as it becomes clear where there is excess capacity, rooms are being released from the official accommodation bank which means they will be available to the general public."
She said many hotels only posted their rates to the public 12 months ahead, so it expected more rooms would become available around that time.
The official RWC 2011 website www.rugbyworldcup.com lists links to a range of accommodation providers around the country.
