Join Jason Walls and Chris Smith as they discus the international markets, and take a look at the week ahead on NBR Radio, and on-demand on MyNBR Radio.

International Markets: The overnight markets were pretty cautious, the S&P only off 8 points last night as we lead into a busy week.

“Year-to-date, we are now looking at a 2.8% gain for the S&P 500, our local market up 3.5% year-to-date, and the Australian market having a much better year compared to last year.”

Huge result for Apple: Apple continues to defy expectations and once again beat analysts’ expectations.

“China outsold the US for Apple in this current quarter, which has never happened before. The China growth story is continuing with iPhone sales just continuing to increase.”

US companies on course to return $1 trillion to shareholders this year: This growth story is a continuing theme which can be observed across all the major corporations in the US.

“These companies have so much money on their books at the momen and interest rates are at record low levels so they have little option but to buy back shares, which they are buying back at record valuation levels.”

A look at the week ahead: US GDP and FOMC meeting for this week, as well as US earning season continuing and of course, the OCR review from the Reserve Bank.

“The concerning thing for the market is the Fed members continuing to be so divided. Every week we see Fed members commenting on their view of the economy, when interest rates should be rising and they continue to be quite divided.”
