Talks between Foreign Minister Murray McCully and United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week will touch on cooperation in the Pacific and the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.

Mr McCully is travelling to the US today to meet with Mrs Clinton and other high-ranking officials in the Obama administration.

The meetings follow the signing of the Wellington Declaration, which promised regular political and military talks, during Mrs Clinton's visit to New Zealand last November.

Mr McCully said the talks with Mrs Clinton would touch on current issues including Afghanistan, Pacific cooperation and developments in the Middle East.

"The visit also gives me an opportunity to extend our appreciation to the United States for the extremely prompt and generous support offered to New Zealand in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake," he said.

Mr McCully will meet US officials including Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Senator John McCain, Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides, Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and the National Security Council's East Asia Pacific senior director Danny Russel.

He will deliver a speech to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies on the New Zealand-US relationship in the Pacific.
