A Wairarapa vineyard at 143 Dakins Rd has been placed on the market in a mortgagee sale.

Land records say the owner of the 31ha property is Mebus Estate, a company associated with Michael Mebus.

In 2009, the Overseas Investment Office reported that Google founder Larry Page and Sergey Brin were acquiring 42ha of land from Mebus.

But the transaction does not appear to have gone ahead.

The Mebus family pioneered grape growing in the area.

But numerous smaller producers have been caught up in mortgagee sales over the past four years, including several in Wairarapa.

The property has a rateable value of $1.6 million and includes 25ha of vines anda large Tuscan-style residence.
