Meridian Energy's customer numbers and electricity generation were lower in the three months to September compared to the same period a year earlier.

The state-owned company, which operates hydro stations on the Waitaki River and at Lake Manapouri, said its generation volumes in the past month had fallen as a result of increased generation from competitors, with hydro national inflows and storage above average.

Total Meridian generation in the September quarter was 3386 gigawatt hours (GWh), down from 3532GWh a year earlier. Hydro generation fell to 3158GWh in the latest period from 3316GWh a year earlier, while wind generation edged up to 228GWh from 216GWh.

Retail customer numbers fell to 180,237 in the three months to September, down from 184,444 the year before.

At the end of September, Meridian's storage position was 1537GWh, which was 143 percent of historical average. During the September quarter the company recorded 2643GWh of inflows, 113 percent of historical average
