MFAT’s Hawaii mansion

David Farrar on New Zealand has a consul general in Hawaii in a really expensive house.

Thu, 01 Oct 2015

For some reason New Zealand has a consul general in Hawaii. The person's main job appears to be working with Palau, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, so I wonder the person is not located on one of those islands.

But even if you do need one in Hawaii, does the person really need a $6.2m luxury home?

I didn’t have a problem with the New York apartment bought for $11 million because we have a major mission in New York, and apartments there are hideously expensive, and it will be used for diplomatic meetings and receptions.

But I really can’t see why you need that in Hawaii. It looks wasteful. It has heated pools, waterfalls and marble.
