Microsoft has released it's long-awaited Office Mobile for iPhone.
The software is free, but only available to those with a subscription to the cloud-based Office 365 - and, so far, only to those in the US.
As with its free Office Mobile for Windows Phone, formatting and layout remain intact when viewing, editing or adding comments - on your phone, and when you return a document to your PC or Mac.
There is no Android version, nor iPad version. Microsoft says none is planned; it sees tablet owners using Office 365's web apps.
A hands-on review by The Verge says, "The basic application consists of four sections to access recent documents, SkyDrive folders, document creation, and settings. It's a lot like the Windows Phone version of Office, with support for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. You can freely create Word and Excel documents, but there are no options to create a PowerPoint presentation from the device ... Overall the app is really basic, and designed for on-the-go editing."
Office Mobile for iPhone is designed to be used in concert with SkyDrive, which costs for extra storage beyond 7GB; more and more, additional online storage is the currency with which users pay for the various free office suites, and other free online services.
