The government could announce its decision on mining schedule four conservation land in three to four weeks, Prime Minister John Key says.
The government has proposed opening up about 700ha of land that is protected against mining, including parts of Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel.
Thousands of submissions have been received on a consultation paper and there have been demonstrations against mining the land.
"A decision hasn't been made on that but I would have thought a reasonable timeframe would be three or four weeks ... I'm not sure it will be much longer than that," Mr Key said `yesterday at his post-cabinet press conference."
He said the submissions were being studied and Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee would soon deliver a precis of what the general recommendations were.
