The Ministry of Economic Development wants advice on the design of Auckland's proposed international convention centre.

It advertised for consultants to act as a peer review panel, to provide advice on the design, operation, functionality and other aspects of the development during the ministry's negotiations with Sky City Entertainment Group over the construction of the new convention centre.

The successful applicant would be required to provide regular and ongoing advice and reporting to the ministry, as well as identifying potential areas of risk, and whether the designs would achieve the Crown's objectives.

These included increasing GDP for New Zealand through additional spending from business events delegates coming to New Zealand, for New Zealand to be seen as an attractive destination for business events and the development of a national network of events venues, of which the international convention centre would be a part.

The ministry said it preferred to deal with one lead supplier for the project, which could involve suppliers working with each other to develop a joint proposal through a consortium or subcontracting arrangements.

The closing date for applications was July 20, with negotiations over the international convention centre contract scheduled to be completed on September 30.

Construction of the centre was due to be finished in 2015.
