Congestion after the quake has affected service in other parts of New Zealand, the company says.

UPDATE / 7pm: "We are now seeing signs that the Spark mobile network is progressively recovering," Spark spokeswoman Lucy Fullerton says.

"However, some customers may still have trouble texting, calling and using mobile data for the time being. We are working on getting everything running smoothly again as soon as possible."

5.30pm: Spark says its mobile network is experiencing problems following this afternoon's 6.4 quake in Kaikoura, which was strong enough to cause a temporary suspension of rail services in Wellington.

Congestion after the quake has affected service in other parts of New Zealand, the company says.

"We are currently experiencing problems on our mobile network, as a consequence of congestion following this afternoons earthquake. Customers may be having problems making calls, sending texts, and using data. Our techs are still investigating the root cause of the ongoing problem and we'll get things back to normal as soon as we can," spokesman Richard Llewellyn tells NBR.

A spokeswoman for 2degrees says its network is operating as usual in the quake area and nationwide.

A Vodafone spokeswoman told NBR, "Vodafone’s network did not suffer damage as a result of the earthquake near Kaikoura.

"We are experiencing a small amount of mobile congestion in parts of New Zealand, as our customers make calls to check in with family and friends.

"We expect this to clear soon and thank our customers for their patience."
