National MP Cam Calder is concerned the Chatham Islands are feeling neglected.
In a press release Dr Calder said he has approached television networks, presumably all three of them, with a request to include the isles on the evening weather maps and forecasts.
Hobnobbing with the locals as part of a recent Parliamentary rugby team tour, he spoke with many local residents.
“A number of issues were raised,” he said. “But a recurring one was the fact that the Chatham Islands are rarely included in the weather forecasts.”
Clearly the most pressing issue raised, given that it was the only one he’s written a press release.
“The Chatham Islands are an important part of our country, contributing hugely to the size of New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone.”
Private Bin reckons the Chathams don’t have much chance…. It took years before even Tauranga got elevated up the ranks to get a shaky webcam.
But if they do include the Chathams, population 650, then perhaps the networks will consider Waiheke Island as the next overseas location to include.
For those not in the know… the Chathams lie to the east of New Zealand on the other side of the 180 degree longitude line, however the International Date Line dodges around the islands, so they are at least in the same day as New Zealand. Time in the Chathams is 45 minutes ahead of NZST.
