Back in March, Navman Wireless Asia Pacific VP Ian Daniel told NBR his company had looked closely at iPhone apps but had no plans to release one.
Navman Wireless’ target market would never go for any mobile app, said Mr Daniel.
Commercial fleet managers would always prefer a dedicated, wired unit because a mobile’s battery could die, or a driver could simply turn it off.
Now, the Auckland-based, global company has overcome its qualms and bowed to popular demand, this week unveiling its first iPhone app (see screen shots below).
But far from giving staff free rein, the app actually gives control freaks more control.
It's designed to let a business owner see where their vehicles are via the OnlineAVL2 App on their iPhone (previously, the OnlineAVL2 dashboard and dispatching module has only been available for a PC).
The Navman Wireless iPhone app is a free download, as long as you’re already a customer of a Navman Wireless product such as the $160.95 per month per vehicle M-Nav 760 and Qube tracking device.
Although not as fully-featured as a dedicated Navman in-vehicle unit, the iPhone app does sport core features including:
- Checking the real time location of single vehicles or the entire fleet
- Sending and receiving messages to and from vehicles
- Routing vehicles to destination
- Replaying recent movements of vehicles
Navman Wireless is one of three companies created after the original Navman was split in three following its international sale.
