All roads led to Auckland this week, with the government picking up its effort to deal  with the ever-rising pressure on the region’s infrastructure.

Senior ministers Bill English, Nick Smith and Simon Bridges made announcements relating to finance, housing and transport in the city.

However they are all relating to good intentions. There might be more funding; there might be toll roads and the like, something that the government until now has been opposed to. There have been a lot more houses consented under the government’s special housing areas, Dr Smith announced, but tellingly he couldn’t say how many actual houses have been built. For some reason, the government isn’t collecting data on this.

In other areas National has been admirably focussed on outcomes, rather than inputs, of its policies. The party’s refusal to measure results in terms of how much it is spending, or what its various bureaucratic inputs are, but on what actually improves, has been the hallmark of social policy and one which Mr English, in particular, has been keen to emphasise.
