NBR Radio Weekend Rumble: chewing over a possible détente in the burger walls

“The Whopper's flame grilled patty combined with the Big Mac's special sauce is a taste that is indeed capable of inspiring world peace”

NBR journalists Calida Smylie, Chelsea Armitage, Emerson Howitt, Deborah LaHatte, Hamish McNicol, Jason Walls, Nathan Smith and Nick Grant discuss – or dismiss – some of the week's stories over a few quiets on NBR Radio and on demand via MyNBR Radio.

Demonstrating their unerring ability to zero in on the prevailing zeitgeist, the assembled brains trust spends the majority of their time discussing the locally cooked up McWhopper campaign that Burger King ambushed fast-food rival McDonald’s with earlier this week (essentially it “invites” McD’s to combine its Big Mac with BK’s Whopper in the name of world peace – no, seriously).

And in their never-ending quest for truth, the journos also partake in an on-air taste-test in which they shove a segment of each burger in their mouths at the same time to see how the proposition would work in practice.

Reactions are mixed.

Resident curmudgeon Nick Grant is of the view that the combination “manages to take two average burgers and somehow make them worse.”

On the other hand, the “mature* palate” of fast-food aficionado Jason Walls leads him to declare, “The Whopper’s flame grilled patty combined with the Big Mac’s special sauce is a taste that is indeed capable of inspiring world peace” (*it’s worth noting there’s every reason to believe “mature” doesn’t mean what Mr Walls thinks it does).

The BK publicity push is compared and contrasted with Eat My Lunch’s crowdfunding campaign, which was generally agreed to be more nutritionally and ethically palatable.

Proceedings are wrapped up with a brief discussion on the import of this week’s conniptions about the Chinese stockmarkets (mild spoiler: the majority consensus is pretty much “yeah, whatever”).
