ANZ has swiftly appointed a new chief executive from within its own ranks – a fortnight after Jenny Fagg stepped down from the job to receive treatment for cancer.

The bank’s group managing director commercial banking David Hisco is the chief executive effective immediately.

Melbourne-based Mr Hisco will remain a member of the ANZ management board.

During his 30-year career at ANZ Mr Hosco has held a number of senior executive roles in retail and commercial banking including managing director of UDC in New Zealand between 1998 and 2000.

Ms Fagg had been in the role for two years.

Her deputy, Steven Fyfe, covered the position in the interim.

ANZ chairman Sir Dryden Spring said that bank was pleased to have someone of David’s experience and seniority within the ANZ Group to lead the business in New Zealand.

“Importantly, David’s lived and worked in New Zealand and he knows many of our New Zealand staff and customers.”

He said in a statement he understood Ms Fagg’s treatment was progressing well.
